Nitrogen Reduction

Nitrogen emissions are one of the biggest challenges facing modern livestock farming. Farmers are seeking sustainable, practical solutions to reduce this pressure without compromising yield or animal health. Nedmag and its partners provide the answer with a new integrated concept: N-brace — an innovative method that binds nitrogen at the source, reduces emissions, and supports a more efficient mineral cycle.

Nitrogen reduction at the source

The nitrogen issue is placing increasing pressure on the agricultural sector. Farmers are facing stricter emission regulations, while their operational freedom continues to decline. The need for sustainable, practical solutions is greater than ever. N‑brace offers the answer.

What is N‑brace?

N‑brace is a complete concept that effectively reduces ammonia emissions from barns by binding nitrogen directly in the manure. The concept uses the innovative Flux™ spray system (developed by Struvital), which evenly distributes natural, liquid magnesium minerals — such as Nitrocare™ from Nedmag — onto the barn floor.

This process leads to the direct formation of struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate): a solid crystalline compound that binds both nitrogen and phosphate. As a result, nitrogen is prevented from evaporating as ammonia (NH₃) and remains available as a valuable nutrient for soil application.

"N-brace gives farmers what they’re looking for: lower emissions, improved nutrient cycling, and a sustainable future."

Binding ammonia

Another positive effect of the reaction is the binding of ammonia. Ammonia is a strong-smelling gas found in barns and released during manure spreading. It causes odor nuisance and is harmful to the environment due to acidification. When using N‑brace, the ammonia present reacts with magnesium and phosphate to form struvite.

The formed struvite adheres to manure particles and makes these minerals available to crops for a longer time. This not only improves the mineral cycle but also reduces nitrogen losses by up to 50%.

Results and benefits

  • Up to 50% reduction in ammonia emissions (at barn level)
  • Retention of valuable nutrients in the manure
  • Improved barn climate with less odor nuisance and better air quality
  • Higher crop yields and quality due to better mineral availability
  • Reduced use of artificial fertilizers, positively impacting both cost and the environment

N‑brace in practice

The N‑brace concept is designed to be easily implemented in existing barns. The natural minerals are safe for humans and animals and can be integrated into the barn with minimal adjustments. The system offers:

  • Automatic data logging, suitable for validation and monitoring
  • Proven effectiveness under real-world conditions, in cooperation with WUR, NMI, and MeetID

Working together for sustainable agriculture

N‑brace was developed through an intensive collaboration between Nedmag and Struvital, supported by the expertise of research institutions such as WUR, NMI, and MeetID. Together, we combine innovative spraying technology with the power of minerals to build a future-proof, low-emission agriculture.
